Online Learning- An Affordable Advantage

Monday, July 13th, 2009

As a graduate from an expensive private university, debt from student loans will play a significant role in my life for years to come. I want to eventually get a master’s degree to get ahead in the job market, but I worry about taking on more loans and facing more debt. After reading an article entitled “Online College is the Future of Education,” I now realize that online learning is a convenient and affordable solution. I can work at a full-time job while taking courses online to earn my masters degree. I never really considered an online education as a viable option, but after reading this article and learning about its advantages, its become a much more feasible and exciting possibility.

Single-sex Test Validates E-Learning

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I read an interesting article in the Washington Post recently about an experiment in single-sex eduction that’s happening in Maryland. Four schools are setting up small online courses for girls only, following recent trends to explore the value (or lack thereof) in gender-limited classrooms.

There are going to be lots of different opinions about experiments like this – some people will love the idea, others will say that it’s discriminatory, and still others will just wind up scratching their heads. But there’s one thing that everyone can agree on: it really does show just how accepted online learning has become by mainstream educators. According to the article, the number of K-12 students who took online classes increased by nearly 50% since the 2005-06 school year. Whether or not the experiment proves that girls will benefit from a specially tailored curriculum, there is no controversey over the fact that online education is a valid and innovative learning tool.

You’re Never Too Old

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Young people can no longer accuse adults of not being savvy with the Internet. According to elearners.com, online learning is rapidly becoming a popular method used by adults to receive a secondary education. As far back as 2000, 39% of the total number of students participating in online education programs was above the age of 25, so just imagine how many more are learning online today. In our current economy, online learning is making it easier for employed adults to continue working full-time jobs while enhancing their skill set to become more competent and dynamic.

For those who may be worried that the quality of the education is sacrificed for convenience, think again. According to a 2006 report from the Sloane Consortium, Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States, 62% of academic leaders polled rated the learning results from an online education as equal or superior to those from face-to-face learning environments.

With this evidence at your disposal, not only do you now know of an ideal way to improve your career, but you’re also armed with some substantial statistics to use against the next young person who questions your computer literacy.
