Asbestos Awareness (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that provides general awareness training for all employees who may come into contact with asbestos. It covers how to recognize asbestos in the workplace, asbestos hazards, and safe work practices for avoiding exposure to asbestos.

Audience: This program is mandatory awareness level training for all employees who may be incidentally exposed to asbestos as part of their work activities.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Define asbestos and describe the reasons why it was used so prevalently in the past
  • Define asbestos containing material (ACM) and explain how asbestos can be identified
  • Explain the conditions under which asbestos presents a health hazard
  • Identify products and applications that are likely to contain asbestos
  • Define “airborne fibers” and recognize the potential hazard that they pose
  • Recognize friable asbestos and describe how friability contributes to the potential asbestos hazard
  • Describe the causes and symptoms of asbestosis
  • Describe asbestos-related cancers and explain the increased risk for smokers
  • Explain the concept of “background exposure” and describe the risk factors that affect an individual’s chances of developing an asbestos related disease
  • Identify the various safety levels OSHA has set for working with asbestos
  • Explain the criteria for limiting asbestos exposure that are described in the EPA’s map regulation
  • Recognize the employer’s responsibilities to conduct surveys prior to the start of any project that disturbs asbestos
  • Describe the respiratory protection required for various asbestos-related tasks
  • Define engineering controls and properly use two common types: containment and ventilation
  • Explain the wet method engineering control and describe how it reduces the potential asbestos hazard
  • Properly clean up a work site after an asbestos project is completed
  • Properly dispose of ACMs
  • Recognize their right to know their facility’s safe work procedures for dealing with asbestos
