Bloodborne Pathogens (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia training program consists of one lesson that trains participants in epidemiology (general), symptoms and modes of transmission of bloodborne diseases, use if an exposure control plan, how to recognize activities which may involve exposure, proper selection, use and disposal of protective equipment, emergency actions and reporting procedure and the use and benefits of hepatitis B vaccine.

Audience: This program is mandatory awareness level training for all employees who may be incidentally exposed to blood and/or items that may transmit bloodborne diseases.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Explain what bloodborne pathogens are and identify different types of bloodborne pathogens
  • Explain the two ways that bloodborne pathogens can be transmitted
  • Identify contaminated sharps- define occupational exposure and explain how it is determined
  • Identify common hepatitis symptoms
  • Understand the employer's exposure determination responsibilities and what must be included in an exposure determination
  • Identify jobs with occupational exposure
  • Explain the purpose of Universal Precautions
  • Identify work practice controls that must be included in the facility's Universal Precautions
  • Understand the employer's responsibility to provide the hepatitis B vaccination series
  • Explain who is entitled to the vaccination series as well as when and how the vaccination must be performed
  • Identify the records that the employer is required to keep and describe the information that must be included in the different records
  • Explain the purpose of keeping the records and how long specific records must be kept
  • Identify different types of regulated waste
  • Properly handle and dispose of regulated waste
  • Identify exposure incidents and exposure emergencies
  • Property report exposure incidents and emergencies
  • Understand employer training responsibilities and recognize the employee's role in making training a success
  • Explain the purpose of engineering controls
  • Identify engineering controls that provide physical barriers to minimize exposure as well as engineering controls that provide air barriers to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Properly use handwashing facilities and describe the work practice controls that must be implemented to minimize occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Properly handle broken glass and contaminated reusable sharps
  • Replace contaminated or torn work surface protective coverings
  • Property use gloves
  • Identify the conditions which require an employer to provide personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Explain the circumstances under which an employee can choose not to wear PPE
  • Properly use protective clothing to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Property handle contaminated protective clothing
  • Properly decontaminate work surfaces and collect contaminated materials
  • Properly label regulated waste containers
  • Identify proper "bio-hazard" warning labels and signs
  • Describe the HBV vaccination series
  • Explain why a post-exposure prophylaxis may be used
  • Describe what a post-exposure evaluation must include
  • Identify a source individual and what should be done with the source individual's blood
  • Understand what should be done with an employee's blood sample after an exposure incident
