Confined Space Entry (1 –2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that trains confined space entrants and attendants, including an overview of the permit space program, information about confined space hazards, and step-by-step procedures for making safe entries.

Audience: This program is mandatory training for all confined space entrants and attendants.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Recognize permit spaces and their characteristics
  • Explain the purpose of a confined space entry permit and the information typically contained within it
  • Describe the responsibilities of a confined space entrant
  • Describe the responsibilities of a confined space attendant
  • Describe the responsibilities of an entry supervisor
  • Identify safe oxygen levels (19.5%-23.5%) and the hazards associated with oxygen deficiency
  • Use an atmosphere monitor to measure the oxygen level in a confined space
  • Identify readings below 19.5% or above 23.5% as unsafe
  • Identify hazards associated with a combustible atmosphere
  • Properly use the terms UFL and LFL to describe the flammable levels of gases
  • Measure the combustibles level in a confined space and interpret the results
  • Identify the alarm condition for combustibles at 10% of LFL
  • Identify common combustible dusts and describe procedures for determining the LFL
  • Identify hazards associated with toxic atmospheres and use an atmosphere monitor to test a confined space for toxic gases
  • Describe the characteristics and sources of common toxic gases, such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide
  • Describe the symptoms of exposure to common toxic gases
  • Identify other hazards associated with confined spaces, such as mechanical hazards, engulfment hazards and heat-related hazards
  • Describe methods for protecting entrants from these hazards
  • Define the term IDLH and describe several factors that could cause a space to be described as immediately dangerous to life or health
  • Perform the steps required in preparing for a safe entry, including reviewing the permit, identifying personnel, identifying the hazards and checking the equipment
  • Perform pre-opening procedures according to the entry permit, including securing the area, isolating the space, and assuring that the vessel is empty
  • Sample the atmosphere to determine that it is safe for entry
  • If necessary, ventilate the space to make the atmosphere safe to enter
  • Assure safe conditions for work in the confined space, including air quality monitoring, ventilation and wearing required personal protective equipment
  • Respond to emergency conditions as required including ordering an evacuation and performing non-entry rescue
