DOT—Transport of Hazardous Materials

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson, designed for all employees who transport, handle or store hazardous materials. It focuses on work practices for safe loading, unloading, handling, storing and transporting of hazardous materials as well as emergency preparedness for responding to accidents. The course also covers labels and shipping papers that identify hazardous materials in the workplace.

Audience: This program is mandatory awareness level training for all employees who transport, handle or store hazardous materials.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Use the Department of Transportation definition to identify HazMat employees
  • Use the Department of Transportation definition to identify hazardous materials
  • Identify the nine categories of hazardous materials defined by the Department of Transportation and recognize common examples in each category
  • Use DOT’s Table 172.101 to obtain critical information about hazardous materials, such as the proper shipping name, hazard class, identification number, and packing group
  • Describe the purpose of placards for identifying the hazards in vehicles, and labels for identifying the hazard in packages
  • Properly interpret the 11 colors used on placards and labels to identify properties of hazards
  • Properly interpret the 8 icons used on placards and labels to identify types of hazards
  • Properly interpret all information contained on a hazardous material label, including color, symbol and hazard class number
  • Properly interpret all information contained on a hazardous material placard, including color, symbol, hazard class number and identification number
  • Explain the purpose of shipping papers for hazardous materials and describe the information required
  • Properly fill out, read and interpret the hazardous material description on shipping papers
  • Describe the purpose of Emergency Response Information accompanying shipping papers, and be able to use an MSDS for emergency response information
  • Use safe work practices when handling various classes of hazardous materials
  • Use safe work practices when loading and unloading hazardous materials
  • Use common sense and safe work practices to detect hazardous material spills
  • Describe the organization of the DOT Emergency Response Handbook and use the orange guide pages to identify potential hazards and recommended responses
  • Use the green pages of the Emergency Response Handbook to identify procedures for initially isolating the scene of a hazardous material accident
  • Use safe work practices as a first responder at the site of a hazardous material accident
  • Use safe work practices to isolate a hazardous material accident
