Environmental Awareness

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson designed as a general overview of employees’ environmental responsibilities that will help promote good environmental work practices. It focuses on prevention of air and water pollution as well as good work practices for solid waste disposal and spill prevention.

Audience: This program is excellent for all employees whose jobs may have a potential negative effect on the environment.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Define the term “environment” as it is used in EPA regulations, and recognize the significance of the environment
  • Recognize common types of pollutants and describe how they affect the environment
  • Identify several common pathways by which pollutants come in contact with the environment
  • Describe their role in preventing environmental pollution as well as the roles of their company and the EPA
  • Summarize the purpose of the Clean Air Act and explain how it affects their company and their own work practices
  • Summarize the purpose of the Clean Water Act and explain how it affects their company and their own work practices
  • Summarize the purpose of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and explain how it affects their company and their own work practices
  • Summarize the purpose of the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation Liability Act (CERCLA) and explain how it affects their company and their own work practices
  • Summarize the purpose of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) and explain how it affects their company and their own work practice
  • Summarize the purpose of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and explain how it affects their company and their own work practices
  • Define “hazardous waste” and explain where they can find safe handling procedures for different types of hazardous waste
  • State the purpose of the Uniform Waste Manifest and identify the information it contains
  • Properly fill out, read and interpret a Uniform Waste Manifest
  • Use the chain of custody on a Uniform Waste Management to identify the legally responsible person at various stages through generation, transport, storage and disposal
  • Define the responsibilities of the hazardous waste generator and transporter
  • Define the responsibilities of hazardous waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) facilities
  • Define “release” and identify the conditions under which a release must be reported
  • Properly respond to a hazardous release
  • Identify the means and methods to prevent, contain and clean up spills
