Fire Protection/Fire Extinguishers (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that trains participants on the responsibilities and functions of fire brigade members and the use of portable fire extinguishers and protective equipment.

Audience: This program is mandatory awareness level training for all employees.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Perform the proper procedures in case of an emergency
  • Perform basic fire prevention procedures on the job
  • Properly follow guidelines for dealing with emergency vehicles and for leaving access to emergency equipment unobstructed
  • Perform the procedures for responding to a fire, including sounding the alarm and calling in a fire report
  • Perform the procedures for evacuating a building according to the facility’s emergency evacuation plan
  • Perform first aid procedures for someone who is suffering from fire-related injuries
  • Identify the three components necessary for a fire to occur
  • Describe characteristics of class a fires involving ordinary combustibles
  • Describe characteristics of class b fires involving flammable liquids or gasses
  • Describe characteristics of class c fires involving energized electrical equipment Describe characteristics of class d fires involving combustible metals
  • Describe the three main principles for extinguishing a fire
  • Describe the function and general guidelines for a fire brigade
  • Describe the classes of extinguishers and identify common extinguishing agents
  • Describe the method for determining when a fire extinguisher may be effectively used
  • Perform the procedure for activating and operating a hand-held extinguisher
  • Perform the procedures for conducting monthly inspections and annual maintenance of fire extinguishers
  • Describe the components of personal protective equipment used by fire brigades and identify when it must be worn
  • Describe respiratory protection and identify when such equipment is necessary
  • Identify auxiliary fire equipment and describe when and how such equipment may be used
