Hazard Communication—Overview (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia training program consists of one lesson that trains participants to recognize chemical hazards, including interpreting and applying the information found on container labeling, hazard warnings and MSDSs, and how to protect against these hazards.

Audience: This program is mandatory awareness level training for all employees who may be exposed to chemical hazards.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Describe the factors that define a chemical as hazardous and show examples of warning labels on containers and around work areas
  • Describe the physical hazards associated with hazardous chemicals
  • Describe the health hazards associated with hazardous chemicals
  • Explain how acute and chronic health effects can occur when dealing with hazardous chemicals
  • Explain the required contents of a manufacturer’s label and properly interpret labels found in the workplace
  • Explain the required contents of a secondary label and properly interpret labels found in the workplace
  • Describe the purpose of a material safety data sheet (MSDs) and identify the information it contains
  • Properly interpret the information on an MSDs
  • Describe visual methods for detecting hazardous chemicals and the limitations of these methods
  • Describe olfactory methods for detecting hazardous chemicals and the limitations of these methods
  • Describe the use of health effects detection and explain the limitations of this method of detection
  • Explain how surveys and inspections can be used to identify hazardous conditions in the workplace
  • Explain how monitoring devices can be used to identify hazardous chemicals in the workplace identify and describe procedures the employer can use to insure a safe work area including isolation, substitution, rotating workers, and proper ventilation
  • Identify and use the proper personal hygiene procedures to protect from hazards
  • Identify and use safe work practices to protect from hazards
  • Identify and use appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing in hazardous zones
  • Explain situations in which equipment is most effective
  • Take appropriate actions in the event of a chemical spill
  • Properly treat a chemical burn
  • Take appropriate action in the event of a fire
