Hearing Conservation (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia training program consists of one lesson that trains participants to understand the health effects of noise and the purpose, selection, fitting, use and care of hearing protectors.

Audience: This program is mandatory training for all employees who may be exposed to noise hazards.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Describe the process of hearing
  • List the effects excessive noise can have on the body
  • Explain a decibel (dBA)
  • Define the action and threshold levels for sound
  • Explain the benefits of engineering or administrative controls
  • Describe and contrast the two types of monitoring that can be done for hearing conservation
  • List the employer requirements for hearing protection
  • List the employer requirements for hearing tests
  • List the employer requirements for providing training and information to the employees
  • List the employer requirements for record keeping
  • Describe disposable hearing protection and its advantages and disadvantages
  • Properly insert, use and care for disposable hearing protection
  • Describe non-disposable hearing protection and its advantages and disadvantages
  • Properly insert, use and care for non-disposable hearing protection
  • Describe ear muffs and their advantages and disadvantages
  • Properly wear, use and care for ear muff hearing protection
  • List the purpose for audiometric testing and define a baseline audiogram
  • Describe both the employee’s and the employer’s responsibilities
  • List the procedure for scheduling and taking a hearing test
  • List the follow-up requirements when there is a possible standard threshold shift
