Powered Industrial Vehicles: Forklifts (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that trains participants in the proper operation of forklifts.

Audience: This program is mandatory training for all employees who drive forklifts.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Identify who may operate a forklift and for what purpose
  • Properly perform a walk-around inspection
  • Identify when a forklift must be inspected
  • Properly perform an operational inspection and test drive
  • Identify when a forklift should be removed from service
  • Properly refuel a combustible fuel-powered forklift
  • Properly recharge an electric forklift
  • Locate and identify a forklift’s weight capacity as well as the weight of the load
  • Describe how attachments affect the weight capacity and stability of a forklift
  • Describe a properly loaded pallet and recognize signs of an unstably loaded pallet
  • Use proper loading and unloading procedures
  • Use proper stacking and unstacking procedures
  • Describe factors that affect load stability
  • Properly maneuver forklifts in normal work environments
  • Use proper safety procedures for maneuvering forklifts in areas where visibility is poor or obstructed
  • Identify when to operate the forklift in reverse
  • Describe the safety procedures for working around pedestrians
  • Recognize vehicles, such as trucks, tractor trailers, and railcars that have been properly prepared for loading or unloading
  • Use proper safety procedures for leaving a forklift unattended
  • Identify specific safety concerns for working in enclosed areas
  • Properly enter a freight elevator with a forklift
  • Describe the proper procedure to take if a load becomes unstable or if a forklift tips
