Powered Industrial Vehicles: General (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that trains participants in the proper operation of tractors, platform lift trucks and motorized hand trucks.

Audience: This program is mandatory training for all employees who operate tractors, platform lift trucks, and motorized hand trucks.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Identify who may operate a powered industrial vehicle and for what purpose
  • Identify the eleven different designations and describe the purpose of such designation
  • Properly perform a job in accordance with fire safety regulations
  • Identify typical unclassified locations and identify which vehicle designations may operate in unclassified locations
  • Describe the three types of classified locations and identify restrictions concerning the operation of powered industrial vehicles in these locations
  • Properly inspect a powered industrial vehicle and identify when a vehicle must be inspected
  • Properly refuel a combustible fuel powered industrial vehicle
  • Properly change and store tanks for lpg powered industrial vehicles
  • Properly recharge an electric powered industrial vehicle
  • Properly remove a vehicle from service when repairs are necessary
  • Properly maneuver powered industrial vehicles in normal work environments
  • Use proper safety procedures for maneuvering vehicles in areas where visibility is poor or obstructed
  • Use proper safety procedures for leaving a vehicle unattended
  • Properly follow guidelines for dealing with emergency vehicles and for leaving access to emergency equipment unobstructed
  • Describe the safety procedures for working around pedestrians
  • Use proper safety procedures for lifting and transporting personnel with vehicles designed for that purpose
  • Use proper safety procedures concerning overhead and side clearance at doorways, and on ramps and elevations
  • Recognize vehicles, such as trucks, tractor trailers and railcars that have been properly prepared for loading or unloading
  • Identify specific safety concerns for working in enclosed areas
  • Properly enter a freight elevator with a powered industrial vehicle
