Lead Safety (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of
one lesson that trains participants to understand the risks associated with lead and how to prevent overexposure through monitoring and safety procedures.

Audience: This program is mandatory awareness training for all employees who may be exposed to lead hazards.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Understand how lead can enter the body and how it is dispersed once inside the body
  • Recognize the dangers of acute exposure to large doses of lead and identify the symptoms of chronic overexposure to lead
  • Explain how chronic overexposure to lead may affect major body organs and systems
  • Define permissible exposure limit (PEL), time weighted average (TWA), and action level
  • Explain how the time weighted average is used to determine possible overexposure to lead
  • Understand employer training responsibilities and recognize the employee's role in making training a success
  • Explain the purpose of an initial determination for lead concentrations
  • Recognize when an initial, or an additional determination, is required
  • Explain when exposure monitoring must be established by the employer as welt as when and how employees must be notified of their lead exposure
  • Understand how employee lead exposure levels affect the monitoring schedule and how monitoring may be discontinued and reinstated
  • Explain what employees can do to protect themselves from lead overexposure and understand that protecting the employee's health is the responsibility of the employer and the employee
  • Understand the condition under which employees can observe the exposure monitoring of the work area
  • Describe what the observer is entitled to during the observation
  • Relate the blood lead level to lead exposure
  • Identify the blood lead levels that, according to OSHA, must be maintained for working adults to prevent illness or adverse reproductive health effects
  • Understand the respiratory protection an employee is entitled to according to the lead standard
  • Recognize the respiratory protection responsibilities of the employer
  • Properly use protective clothing to protect against lead exposure
  • Identify the conditions which require an employer to provide protective clothing Properly use a change room and shower facility to protect against lead exposures exceeding the permissible exposure limit
  • Properly clean lead dust from work surfaces following OSHA guidelines
  • Identify the records that the employer is required to keep and describe the information that must be included in the different records
  • Explain the purpose of keeping the records and how long specific records must be kept
  • Understand how the medical surveillance program is designed to protect them
  • Identify individuals who might not be protected by control systems
  • Describe when medical examinations must be provided to employees, who must conduct them and what will be included in the examinations
  • Relate the frequency of blood monitoring to an employee's blood lead level
  • Identify when and how employees must be notified of their blood monitoring results
  • Understand the provisions for a second medical opinion and what must be done in order for the employer to provide payment for the second opinion
  • Recognize the purpose and provisions of medical removal
