Personal Protective Equipment (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that addresses the training requirements of OSHA’s revised standard on personal protective equipment. It covers general requirements for selection and use of personal protective equipment (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132), as well as information about specific types of equipment for eye, face, head, foot, and hand protection (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133, 1910.135, 1910.136, 1910.183).

Audience: This program is mandatory training for all employees who may use personal protective equipment on the job.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

Recognize the roles of the Hazard Assessment, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls and Personal Protective Equipment in providing safe working conditions as well as be able to complete the following specific items:

Eye and Face Protection:

  • Identify approved protective eyewear and identify the types of hazards for which it offers protection
  • Select the appropriate primary eye protection, such as protective spectacles or goggles, for various types of work
  • Select the appropriate secondary eye protection, such as a face shield, for various types of work, and recognize that it must be used only in addition to primary protective eyewear
  • Properly put on, take off, inspect and care for protective eyewear.

Head Protection:

  • Explain how the parts of a protective helmet offer protection against common potential hazards to the head
  • Identify the level of protection offered by Class A, B and C protective helmets, and identify the appropriate helmet for a job
  • Inspect protective helmets
  • Properly put on, adjust and wear a protective helmet
  • Properly maintain and store a protective helmet.

Foot Protection:

  • Identify approved protective footwear and identify the types of hazards for which it offers protection
  • Identify additional safety features found on some types of protective footwear and explain the hazards for which they offer protection
  • Properly wear protective footwear
  • Inspect and maintain protective footwear.

Hand Protection:

  • Describe the hazards for which gloves should be worn and explain the factors which must be considered when selecting gloves for a particular job
  • Identify abrasion-resistant work gloves and explain the hazards for which they offer protection
  • Identify thermal gloves and explain the hazards for which they offer protection
  • Properly size, inspect and wear abrasion resistant and thermal gloves
  • Identify various types of chemical resistant gloves and explain the hazards for which they offer protection and properly size, inspect, wear and remove chemical-resistant gloves
