Respiratory Protection (1-2 hours of training)

This comprehensive interactive multimedia-training program consists of one lesson that trains participants in the selection, fitting, cleaning, sanitizing, storage, inspection and repair of various types of respirators.

Audience: This program is mandatory training for all employees who may use respiratory protection equipment on the job.

Prerequisites: This lesson is designed so that no prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

  • Be able to describe the respiratory protection responsibilities of the employer
  • Explain the purpose of an employer’s respiratory protection program and the employee’s role in the program
  • Describe the respiratory protection responsibilities of the employee
  • Identify protection factors and explain how the protection factor indicates the effective-ness of different respirators
  • Explain how Air Purifying Respirators (APRs) work
  • Describe the conditions necessary for proper function of an APR
  • Explain the differences between air purifying respirators and Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs)
  • Describe what is required in order for PAPRs to function properly
  • Describe the limitations of APRs and PAPRs
  • Explain how a supplied air respirator (SAR) works and identify the appropriate applications for this type of respirator
  • Describe the conditions necessary for the proper function of an SAR
  • Explain how a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) works and identify the appropriate applications for this type of respirator
  • Describe the conditions necessary for the proper function of an SCBA
  • Describe the limitations of working with air line respirators and SCBAs
  • Read and properly interpret respirator cartridge labels
  • Identify different types of special use respiratory equipment, such as high efficiency filters, and describe appropriate applications for each
  • Explain the purpose of a qualitative fit test and its limitations
  • Inspect an air purifying respirator
  • Inspect a supplied air respirator
  • Properly don a respirator
  • Perform positive and negative pressure fit checks
  • Properly clean and store respirators
  • Define the term IDLH and describe several factors that could cause an environment to be considered immediately dangerous to life and health
  • Describe an oxygen deficient atmosphere
  • Explain the precautions that must be taken in several emergency situations
